One day, unexpectedly, something happened in the town of Chaney's Hills. Communications and traffic were interrupted, and those who went to investigate never returned. While it looked like a peaceful town from the outside, unimaginable horror was happening inside. The Government reacted by dispatching a company to Chaney's Hills, but in just a few hours they lost contact with all of their troops; none of them reported back. The scientists tasked with analyzing this phenomenon came to a dreadful conclusion: they were dealing with a "supernatural invasion"; in other words, whatever was happening inside that town was beyond conventional scientific knowledge. It was an invasion from the realm of the dead.

Not even the use of nuclear weapons may be able to stop this phenomenon...
However, there was one last hope: the recently founded S-S.W.A.T. (Supernatural & Special Weapon Attack Team). Unfortunately, all of its veteran members went missing one by one while investigating the events of Chaney's Hills. There was only one member still accounted for: the latest recruit, Lila Alphon. As a quirk of fate, she was born and raised in Chaney's Hills, and her potential in the use of psychic abilities was exceptionally high; however, she had not yet awakened her full abilities...
The "Chaney's Hills Horror" had already claimed the lives of thousands. Will this brave young lady have what it takes to put an end to this supernatural invasion?

Supernatural & Special Weapon Attack Team ・

S-S.W.A.T. (Supernatural & Special Weapon Attack Team)

A special task force trained in the use of psychic powers. It has to be noted that, while it's referred to as "psychic power", it is nothing as fantastic as telekinesis, teleportation or x-ray vision. Their ability is called "P.S. (Psychic Sealed) REM", which allows them to "seal" psychic power into conventional weapons, bestowing them with great destructive power.
Officially they are meant as a countermeasure against guerrilla warfare, but their true purpose has never been disclosed...

Lila Alphon
Main character

The newest recruit of S-S.W.A.T. 21 years old. She has been tasked with the investigation of the incident at Chaney's Hills, rescuing the survivors and putting an end to the problem. While she is not as experienced as her comrades, her latent psychic powers are the strongest in the team.
She will have to master her skills while fighting the abominable creatures that roam Chaney's Hills, and trying to solve the mystery by getting intel from the survivors/gathering any clue she might find.
Unbeknownst to her, this incident has much to do with her past, present and future... As she solves the mystery, Lila Alphon will learn about her true destiny.

PAGE 8

Colonel Jack Romero

Commander of S-S.W.A.T. Male, 45. Previously affiliated with the Military Intelligence Corps. He has fully devoted himself to S-S.W.A.T. ever since its founding. His experience in real battle scenarios makes him a perfect leader for this team.

2nd Lieutenant Bill Cameron

Male, 32. Previously part of a special commando unit. Selected for his outstanding achievements in battle, he is tasked with breaking the enemy formation by charging ahead with his trusted shotgun.

1st Lieutenant Heather Cronenberg

Second-in-command of S-S.W.A.T. Female, 28. She may seem young for such an important position, but it is no mistake: her PS REM ability is one of the highest ever recorded. With her ability of drawing out latent psychic powers of others, she may be able to help Lila unleash her full potential.

Corporal Greg Castle

Male, 29. He is usually tasked with communications and transport of military supplies and personnel, but he has decided to act independently during this operation.

PAGE 9

Most of the residents of Chaney's Hills were killed by the mysterious creatures which have somehow appeared in town; however, a few individuals managed to escape the carnage. The following are a few of the remaining survivors. Some may be hiding underground, others may be roaming the town, hoping to be rescued. They must be found as soon as possible and guided back to the only safe place in town: the church.

Carpenter

Male, 42. Reverend of Chaney's Hills church, the only place the creatures are avoiding for some as of yet unexplained reason. He will look after the survivors.

Carrie

Female, 35. She was the first to find shelter inside the church. While working on her research doctorate in folklore studies, she came to Chaney's Hills to consult her former teacher and archaeologist, Prof. Whitman. Their combined knowledge may be the key to solving the mystery of this incident.

PAGE 10

Wells

Male, 60. Mayor of Chaney's Hills. He pushed for the redevelopment of some of the older parts of town, but faced the lifetime, harsh opposition of Lord Browning. After Browning's death, he finally went through with his project, but then THIS incident happened. A typical corrupt politician, he is highly uncooperative with Lila.

Whitman

Male, 62. As an archaeologist, he always found the ancient lore of Chaney's Hills very interesting, so much so that he has moved there just so he could focus on studying it in more depth. He had a research laboratory constructed in the outskirts of the town, where he analyzes the artifacts he manages to excavate from the ruins.

Janet

Female, 26. A teacher at the local school. Having lost most of her pupils in the incident, she is terribly traumatized. It seems the school building may be highly relevant to the incident...

Doctor Bass

Male, 47. Chief physician of the hospital on the western side of town. It seems he is dissecting bodies of dead creatures in order to find a scientific explanation to this abnormal phenomenon...

PAGE 11 and 12

The mysterious monsters that have suddenly appeared in Chaney's Hills. Due to their grotesque appearance and unexplained origin, they have been simply named "creatures".

It seems that those killed by these creatures come back as living corpses and fight on their side. Why have they attacked this peaceful town? Can they really be stopped?

Man-eater

They lurk indoors, on the ceilings. These parasitic amoebas hide their human host inside their bodies to feed on them.

Fisher dragon

An aquatic creature that lurks in the lake. It will attack suddenly from underwater, so you must be cautious when traversing the lake.

Parasite

A large, spider-like creature. It is very fast, thanks to its eight legs.

Melting man

A parasitic creature bonded with a living corpse. Its body is in a constant cycle of decomposition and regeneration.

Rock beast

An insect-like creature with a carapace as hard as stone. It will use its strong arms and sharp claws to attack.

Spawnhead

A creature that lurks mostly underground. It will use its tentacles to attack.

Skeleton

A parasitic creature with an enormous, deformed cranium. It will use its powerful jaw and fangs to fight.

Guardian

A powerful creature whose purpose is to halt Lila's progress with its powerful arms and titanic body.

How to start

After turning on the console, you will see the title screen (like in the picture on the left). Press SELECT to highlight "START" and then press RUN.
(For more information about CONTINUE, please refer to P.15 and 18)

Game objective

(1)	In this game, you will play as Lila. Your first objective is to find any survivor and bring them to safety inside the church.
(2)	The survivors belong to two types: those who follow without question, and those who won't follow you. In the latter case, you should pay attention to what they say, as it may hold a clue as to how to convince them to follow you. Don't worry, eventually you will be able to bring them all to safety. However, do note that you can only take one survivor at a time with you.
(3)	As you progress into the game, you will find out details about the mystery of the incident. In the end, you will be able to uncover the truth about this supernatural invasion.

PAGE 14

How to play

(1)	In order to talk to a survivor or to inspect an item/location, you must walk towards them.
(2)	You should talk repeatedly to the survivors in order to gather information and hints.
(3)	When you are escorting a survivor, nearby survivors won't talk. Focus on leading the survivor you're escorting to the church first (Once you leave the building they were located in, they will be able to get to the church on their own).
(4)	Whenever a survivor mentions an area, you should go inspect it. Please refer to the map inside this manual to find each location.
(5)	Keep listening to the survivors. Little by little you will solve the mystery behind the incident.

Items and weapons

(1)	At first Lila will only be equipped with the most basic equipment. You will be able to find other items and weapons inside boxes, or given to you by the survivors.
(2)	While there is no limit to how many weapons you carry, there is a limit regarding the items.
(3)	In order to use an item or to use PS REM on your weapons, press SELECT and you will be brought to the item screen.

Battle Mode

(1)	When moving through the town, at times you will be attacked by various creatures. When you encounter the enemy, you will enter Battle Mode.
(2)	In Battle Mode, press II to attack. Each type of creature has a different weakness or weapon that affects it. You will have to find the best approach to each one of them during your travels.

PAGE 15

(3)	You can escape from most creatures by exiting either side of the screen; however, if you run too often Lila won't be able to improve her skills (i.e. get EXP) and you won't be able to collect additional ammunition.
(4)	All weapons share the same ammunition pool, at different rates depending on the weapon used. Lila's PS REM is the ability of sealing psychic power inside a weapon to increase its power; whether a weapon has been improved with PS REM or not does not change its ammunition consumption.

PF and MF

(1)	Lila's two main parameters are PF (Power Force), which measures her health, and MF (Mind Force), which measures her psychic energy. Enemies will drop a blue box when defeated, which increases your EXP when collected; increasing your level will raise your MAX-PF. Your MAX-MF is only increased by discovering important intel or finding important items.
(2)	Your PF is decreased when you get injured in battle; if it gets down to 0, Lila will die and you will get a GAME OVER. You can restore your PF by eating rations or using medicine.
(3)	Your MF is decreased when you are injured in battle and when you use PS REM on your weapons. You can restore your MF with tranquillizers. Do note that MF is also related to Lila's defense rate; a higher MF value will give her a higher defense rate.
(4)	You can recover PF and MF by defeating enemies or by returning to the church. Do note that returning to the church will also cancel the effect of PS REM on your weapons. PS REM will have to be reapplied once you go outside the church.

Continue

If you inspect the cross mark on the left side of the Cross inside the church you will be able to see the current password. Be sure to write it down - you can use it to continue your game.
Whenever you use a password to continue the game, the boat will always be placed outside the church.

Lila can use 8 different types of weapons. Her basic equipment only includes a combat knife and a handgun; you will have to obtain the others during your travels in Chaney's Hills, one way or the other.
Each weapon has its own pros and cons; it's up to you to decide which weapon to use according to the situation.

PS REM

PS REM, "Psychic Sealed Remedy", is the ability to seal psychic energy into the ammunition of conventional weapons, increasing their destructive power. Applying PS REM uses a different amount of MF depending on the weapon.
Be aware that Lila's defense rate is proportional to your current amount of MF; try to conserve some MF to keep your defense up while fighting creatures.

[TN NOTE: the manual originally states that you only apply PS REM on a certain amount of ammunition, but it doesn't seem to be the case in the game]

* Combat Knife
Not very strong, but indispensable in close quarters.

* Handgun [SIG Sauer P226]
Part of your basic equipment. While not as strong as other weapons, it uses a low amount of ammunition.
[TN NOTE: the line originally said "you can apply PS REM to a high amount of ammunition"]

* Rifle [Steyr AUG]
Can fire single or automatic. Very versatile.

* Shotgun [SPAS-12]
Due to its wide spread, useful for fighting multiple enemies at once.

* Machine gun [FN Minimi M239 SAW]
Powerful thanks to its high rate of fire.

* Flamethrower [M2A1-7]
Effective against aquatic creatures.

* Grenade Launcher [HK MZP-1]
Extremely powerful direct hits.

* Bazooka [M72A2]
Incomparable firepower.

- Rations Restore Lila's PF by a fixed amount.
- Medicine Fully restores Lila's PF.
- Tranquillizers Restore Lila's MF by a fixed amount.
- Boat Allows you to traverse water.
- Key Allows you to open a locked door.
- Rope ladder Allows you to descend and climb back from somewhere without stairs.
- Radio Allows you to communicate with HQ.
- Armor Increases Lila's defenses, reducing damage in battle.

There are other items that you must acquire during the course of the game. Listen carefully to what the survivors tell you to find out more about them. Furthermore, you can only carry 15 units of consumable items (rations, medicines and tranquillizers).

PAGE 22

If you have trouble progressing through the game, hopefully this page can help you out.

1.	You should read this manual thoroughly. It contains many useful hints.
2.	There is no special trick to this game. Simply put, you should read all the messages that appear on screen. Whenever you see a person, you should talk to them. Furthermore, you should speak to them multiple times, as often they say something different when you talk to them again. In most cases, whenever you can't seem to progress, it's because you have missed a conversation with someone.
3.	You will get a boat that will allow you to traverse water. If you don't have a boat yet, you don't need to worry about those out-of-reach places.
4.	Whenever you save a survivor, get a new item or get important intel, you should go talk to everyone to see if they have something new to say. You should also frequently open your inventory and check your items.
5.	You should return to the church from time to time. Whenever you are stuck, go back and talk to everyone.
6.	When you save new survivors, you should go back to the church to see how they're doing.
7.	The game can be divided into various plot sections; whenever you progress to an important part of the plot, you will be notified that your MAX MF has increased. This is a good time to go back to the church and talk to everyone.
8.	The enemy creatures follow certain attack patterns. Memorizing them will give you an edge in battle. Note that creatures of the same shape but different colors will be stronger than the previous version.
9.	In general, enemies on the left side of the screen are weaker. If you don't want to fight, you should leave through the left side of the battlefield.
10.	If you want to continue the game another time, you should go back to the church and check the cross mark.
[TN NOTE: this part originally also says this: The password will contain hiragana, katakana and alphanumeric characters. Be careful not to confuse one character for the other.]

CARD (BOOKLET)

		The Five Keys to Victory
				(Read before playing!)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Here comes the additional booklet that was included with the game, probably added to warn players about persistent bugs. Please keep in mind that the 2nd and the 3rd point (about EXP and items) were caused by bugs that we fixed in our translation patch, so either of these pieces of advice are not relevant anymore.

1: Talk to people rather than gathering EXP!
This game has many elements typical of an adventure game. Having more EXP won't help you win the game any faster. Be patient, listen to what the survivors say and discover the truth behind Chaney's Hills Horror. Running away from battles is a viable solution that you should consider often.
2: Don't recklessly gather too much EXP, or Lila will die!
Lila's max EXP is 9999. If you surpass this value, Lila's PF will become 0. Be careful about how much EXP you collect. If you get too much EXP during the first half of the game, you may not be able to prevent certain death in the second half!
3: Use medicine, rations and tranquillizers properly!
You can only carry 14 units of medicine, rations and tranquillizers (we wrote 15 in the manual, but that was an error. Sorry!).
While conserving them is important, you should also try to use them rather than let them go to waste. We suggest trying to keep a balance of 6 units of each.
4: We know it's a bother, but write down those passwords!
You should write down your password periodically (we know what a bother it is, forgive us!). That way, you won't lose too much progress if you are defeated by an unexpectedly strong enemy.
5: What to do if you REALLY can't progress
You've read the manual, you've tried everything, but you still can't progress and you're going crazy... what are you supposed to do? In that case, write down the names of the survivors you've currently saved and the complete list of items and weapons in your possession and send it to our address (as written on the back on the manual). We'll write you back ASAP with some help!
